The Jets open the 2022-23 season at home against the Ravens on Sunday. Joe Flacco will start against his old club as Zach Wilson recovers from a preseason meniscus rupture.
The Jets finished 4-13 and last in the AFC East for the sixth consecutive season. First time since 2017 when Baltimore missed the playoffs. Only twice since 2007-08 have the Ravens finished below.500.
Can New York succeed with Flacco as the quarterback, or will Baltimore start strong on the road? Here are my week 1 choice with Tipico Sportsbook odds.
Jets vs Ravens Match Preview
New York went 2-3 ATS last year while Wilson was absent for five games, including blowout defeats to division rivals New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills. The Jets’ ATS record in week 1 matches is identical to the Giants’: 0-5-1.
For its part, Baltimore has covered the spread in four of the previous five meetings between these two AFC clubs, and it is 5-1 ATS in its last six weeks 1 game. The favorite has won outright and covered in four of the past five meetings between the Jets and the Ravens.
Keep in mind that this will be Lamar Jackson, the Ravens quarterback, first starting assignment since week 14 of last season. A sprained ankle he sustained on December 12 against the Cleveland Browns forced the 2019 MVP to sit out the last four games of 2021.
With starting left tackle Mekhi Becton already out, the chances of a newly signed veteran tackle. Duane Brown playing in this game has dropped significantly after he missed three practices this week due to a shoulder ailment.
Due to the absence of Wilson and the fact that the Panthers might be forced to use their third-string left tackle, I believe the Ravens cover this high opening day spread.
Over/Under: Over 44.5 Points (-112)
In case you were wondering, you are reading this correctly. What many people don’t realize is that the Jets were a top pick for betting the over in 2017.
Ten of the Giants’ seventeen games went over in 2021-22, tied for the third-most in the NFL with the Los Angeles Chargers. Since Wilson’s injury in week 7 against the Patriots, the over has won four consecutive games in which the total was 65.5, 75.5, and 62.5.

After missing Jackson for the last month of the season, Baltimore nevertheless ended 8-9 to the over, putting them in striking distance of the division leaders.
Early in the season, four of the Ravens’ first seven games had totals of 56 or more points, a trend that has continued throughout the season.
The over is also favoring the Jets, which is wonderful news. The total has gone over in five of the previous seven home games when the New York Jets were an underdog.
In New York’s last 14 games, the over has occurred 10 times. Even with Flacco at quarterback for the Jets, you should still take the over in this situation.
Moneyline: Ravens (-340)
My money is on the Ravens to cover the -7.5 point spread. Even while the Jets played bravely at times when Wilson was out last season, there were also tight games like the ones I just highlighted, and they are the ones I’m going to bet on.
The Ravens have a steep -340 Moneyline pricing (Bet $340 to win $100), so if you don’t want to take that risk, here are some other bets I’d make at Tipico Sportsbook:
- Over 44.5 Points And a Ravens Victory (+145)
- Score Greater Than 26.5 For Baltimore’s Team (-114)
- The Ravens Will Have Halftime And Final Score Advantage (-145)
Our Prediction: RAVENS 33, JETS 19
If you’re taking the other side and rooting for the Jets, you can’t go wrong betting on them to win by a touchdown or more, which is presently +140 on Tipico Sportsbook, or on them to lead at halftime if they get off to a fast start, which is -107.
The Jets might have a rough start to the season, as they play the entire AFC North division in their first four games and will be without their primary quarterback for at least three of those contests.
My money is on the Ravens at a hefty Moneyline (-340) price to win the season opener at MetLife and cover the -7.5 spread while scoring more than 44.5 points (over 44.5 at -112) on the total points scored bet at Tipico Sportsbook.
